Have you ever wondered why you are seeing more and more therapy animals in healthcare settings such as hospitals, dental offices, and rehabilitation facilities? Written at a 9 to 13-year-old level, but appropriate for all ages, this book will answer that question by highlighting the impact that therapy dog teams have on patients, healthcare professionals, and families. Not only will you learn about the positive benefits that these four-legged healthcare heroes bring to others, but you will also read stories told by real therapy dog teams and the patients they have influenced. It is our hope that by sharing these stories, we can help others see how impactful these visits can be, and that you, too, might be inspired to become a future pet therapy team.
A therapy dog is someone's pet, who partners with their human companion to provide comfort and affection to others in need. A therapy dog must be comfortable in a wide variety of settings and with many different types of people. Therapy dogs can be any breed provided they are friendly, calm, well-trained, and enjoy interacting with others. Once you and your canine companion have completed your test and register with a pet therapy organization, you can volunteer (upon request) at a variety of places. You will quickly see that together you will not only have a huge impact on others in your community, but you will find that it will have a significant and rewarding impact on you, as well!
Both the book and this website were developed to provide general information about therapy animals and how they can serve others in healthcare settings. Consider placing a book in the waiting room of your office or healthcare facility. It is our belief that just viewing the pictures in the book will have a positive impact on others and spread joy to those who pick it up.
The inspiration for writing the book came about while Christi and Layla were visiting children in the oncology clinic. She heard several children make a comment such as, "When I grow up, I want to have a therapy dog and visit kids in the hospital just like me." This book is written at a 9 to 13-year-old reading level but is appropriate for adults and children of all ages. It is 54 pages in length and is educational in nature - each page talks about how therapy dogs can benefit others in different healthcare settings. It does not have to be read from start to finish to understand the content - it was written so that if someone picked it up in a waiting room and only looked at a few pages, they would gain an understanding of what therapy animals can do for others. It was also written with the intent to be a resource for therapy teams to share with others on visits, especially the READ programs. The book is 8x10 with full-page photos, so even very young children who are not yet able to read have enjoyed looking at the photos, which are sure to bring a smile.
The authors also hope to get copies of the book into classrooms, libraries, and school counseling centers.
A recent book review by an elementary school teacher highlighted the benefit of the book at their school: " I am a Gifted Learning Teacher at a public elementary school in Denver. This book helped with a 2nd-grade boy, who was anxious during a lockdown drill recently - he calmed down and read it for a full 30 minutes. I also brought it to read with 2 kindergarteners. The two young children were engaged by the colorful photos and interesting facts! This book digs deep into the ways dogs can help in healthcare; I learned new facts, by reading it, too! I'd recommend Healthcare Heroes to anyone with children in elementary school or middle school."
Proceeds from the sale of this book will be donated to therapy dog organizations. It is our hope that with these donations, more people will be able to register their dog and serve their community by bringing joy and comfort to all those in need.
